M 6.8 - 15 km SSE of Baku, Azerbaijan

Five people killed by falling debris, 23 more died from heart attacks, more than 430 injured and some damage (VI) in the Baku area, Azerbaijan. Three more people were killed the next day by an explosion caused by natural gas leaking from a valve damaged in the main shocks. Felt (VI) at Sumqayit, Azerbaijan and (V) at Bekdash, Turkmenistan. Felt (V) at Izberbash; (IV) at Derbent, Makhachkala and Sergokala; (III) at Khasavyurt and Kumukh; (II) at Buynaksk, Russia. Also felt at Tbilisi, Georgia and in northern Iran.
