M5.8 - Yokohama, Japan, 1880
This moderate earthquake led John Milne to initiate the founding of the first seismological society in the world, the Seismological Society of Japan. Milne obtained a short seismogram, three seconds in length, of this earthquake. He recorded the motion of a long common pendulum on a moving plate.
