Leninabad-Samarkand-Tashkent area and (IV) at Frunze, USSR. Avalanches reported in northern India. Avalanches
and landslides reported in southern Tajikistan, USSR. Felt strongly in northeastern Afghanistan, northern
Pakistan and much of northern India, including New Delhi.

150-200 people killed, many injured and
extensive damage in western Nepal. At least 13
killed, 40 injured and damage in the Pithoragarh
area, India. Felt strongly at Kathmandu, Nepal
and in the New Delhi area, India.
Centered near the coast about 30 miles
west of Caracas, this shock caused 240 fatalities,
1,536 injuries, and over $100 million property damage.
Damage was extensive in the Altamira and Los
Palos Grandes sections of Caracas. Four
apartment buildings, 10 to 12 stories high,
Another pocket of severe damage occurred in the
beach area. Unusual features of this
earthquake were little damage to low buildings;
no evidence of surface faulting; no landslides;
and no interruption of utilities.
