The USGS National Seismic Hazard Model Project (NSHMP) will host a two-day workshop in early March 2018 to solicit feedback from the scientific community on the 2018 update of the National Seismic Hazard Model (NSHM). The workshop will give our partners and interested individuals an opportunity to comment on the inputs to the seismic hazard model, which has historically been adopted into the U.S. Building codes, and affects insurance rate structures, governmental disaster management and mitigation strategies, planning and seismic safety applications, and many site-specific engineering analyses by industries and governments. The 2018 NSHM update will incude implementation of NGA-East GMMS, basin effects, and an updated seismicity catalog.
The first day of the workshop will focus on updates to the central and eastern U.S. (CEUS), which focuses on updates to the CEUS ground motion models (GMMs) (i.e., implementation of the NGA-East GMMs). The second day of the workshop will focus on the western U.S. (WUS) and our plan to incorporate basin effects into the NSHM. We will also discuss the update of the smooth seismicity model. The NSHMP invites the scientific community and other interested individuals to attend this workshop to hear about our plans for the 2018 update to the NSHM, discuss the model, and provide valuable feedback to the NSHMP.
Registration includes refreshments and sandwiches for lunch each day, courtesy of RMS. Please indicate which day(s) you will be attending the workshop on the registration form. (Note: registration is free, but attendees are responsible for their own travel expenses).
We will need to limit the number of in-person attendees to approximately 145 people, therefore, registration for in-person attendance will close once we have reached this limit, or on Friday, March 2nd, 2018, whichever comes first. For those that are unable to attend in-person, or if we exceed the in-person registration limit, we will have a WebEx/conference call system in place in which you can participate remotely. Please indicate on the registration form if you will be participating remotely. Information about participating remotely will be provided at a later time.
For out-of-town attendees, we have a block of 40 rooms reserved at the nearby Marriott Courtyard Hotel in which guests can reserve a room for the government rate of $171 USD per night, if they reserve a room for three nights (check-in March 6th, check-out March 9th). Those traveling on government funding may want to take advantage of this offer, but this room block is also open to non-government funded travelers at the government rate, so please book a room before the room block is full, or before the room block closes on February 6th, 2018, whichever comes first.
