Observed topography (ETOPO5) compared to the topography predicted from the "isostatically balanced crust" of CRUST 5.1. The residual signal in the oceans can be explained by isostatic compensation by a cooling lithosphere. Some of the anomalies on continents are probably caused by dense continental roots beneath the shields.
