Earthquake Early Warning: Is California Ready?
- Doug Given, USGS Pasadena
Today millions of Japanese citizens can receive advanced warning of earthquake shaking before it reaches them. Is such a system feasible for California? What would you do with 30 seconds warning? Come hear how university researchers and government agencies are working together to create an Earthquake Early Warning system in California.
This lecture is free and begins at 7 PM at Sexton Auditorium in the C building at Pasadena City College in Pasadena. There is plenty of free parking available in Lots 5, 6 and 7.
Pasadena City College is located at:

USGS Public Lecture Series and Symposium
Come join the US Geological Survey and over 10 local colleges from around the Los Angeles basin for a mini-conference held at Pasadena City College. This meeting is intended to provide students at all levels the opportunity to learn about other university programs, and aid in early career planning.
Beginning students experience science largely through coursework and typically miss out on the collaborative nature of their discipline. Given that geology programs are often much smaller than other programs in the natural sciences, this symposium is designed to fill the need for inter-collegial cooperation at the student level and to offer students experience with conference-style presentations. The symposium will provide important exposure to many students early in their careers and a chance for students from other colleges to network and meet geology majors from the area.
This meeting will also provide universities the opportunity to directly interact with prospective students and show what they have to offer for bachelors and masters degree programs, in addition to connecting with potential collaborators from around the area.
The Symposium format will be:
- (5:00pm) Poster Session - For all students and faculty projects, and schools to highlight their programs and research.
- (6:00pm) Student Oral Presentations - Three 15 minute powerpoint presentations by selected Masters students
- (6:45pm) Break
- (7:00pm) USGS Public Lecture - Earthquake Early Warning: Is California Ready? presented by Doug Given -- Project Chief of the Southern California Seismic Network
- (8:15pm) After Event Dinner - for all geology majors and faculty, RSVP required
- If you or your institution are interested in participating in the poster session or oral presentations please contact Erik Pounders by November 13.
- Reservations for the After Event Dinner will be taken on a first- come, first-serve basis. This event will sell out, so please RSVP as soon as possible.
- Students are encouraged to wear shirts representing their geology club or affiliations.
