SHIPS - Velocity Model

SHIPS velocity model.

The map represents a horizontal slice through the earth at a depth of 2 miles (3 km). The colors show the seismic velocities determined by SHIPS.

Reds correspond to bedrock which has faster velocities.

The greens and blues show the softer material filling depressions in the bedrock. These depressions, which geologists call sedimentary basins, underlie Olympia, Tacoma, Seattle, Everett and Bellingham, and have slower velocities.

The dotted lines show suspected or known faults.

The location of the Seattle fault zone is inferred from a variety of sources, and closely matches the SHIPS results.

The existence of the Tacoma fault zone is inferred from the SHIPS results as well as previous mapping of the earth’s gravity and magnetic fields.
