The deepest earthquakes typically occur at plate boundaries where the Earth's crust is being subducted into the Earth's mantle. These earthquakes occur as deep as 750 km (400 miles) below the surface.

1892	Imperial Valley, California	7.8	One of the Largest Earthquakes in the United States. At the old Carrizo station in San Diego County, all adobe buildings were destroyed. In Paradise Valley, a church and schoolhouse built on stilts were knocked down and demolished; chimneys and plaster were broken in San Diego. Ground fissures were reported at McCain Valley and Jewel Valley; rockslides were observed between Campo and Carrizo and at Dulzura and Jewel Valley.

1981	Greece	6.8	Sixteen people killed, more than 400 injured, and considerable damage in the Athens-Corinth area. From Significant Earthquakes of the World, 1981.
