Kuril Islands

Kuril Islands. Focus 100 km deep. Felt strongly at Kushiro on the east coast of Hokkaido. Mino tidal wave.

From Seismological Notes, Bulletin of the Seimological Society of America. "Seismological Notes" is a list of recent important earthquakes with short summaries included in each issue of the BSSA.

Destructive earthquake (intensity IX) on the island of Iturup (Kuriles): felt in the Kuriles, Hokkaido and northern Honshu. Intensity VII at Kushiro, VI at Nemuro, Obihiro, Urakawa, Sapporo, Hachinohe, Aomori, Morioka. Slight damage reported at Kushiro, telephone lines cut, dozens of trains brought to a standstill. A tsunami was feared, and the alert was given by the seismological service along all the coasts of Hokkaido and in some parts of Honshu: the coastal population was evacuated, but fears proved unjustified; macroseismic map (Seismological Bulletin JMA, November 1958).

1958, November 6, 22:58. A magnitude 8.1 earthquake in the South Kuril Islands (USSR) generated a tsunami recorded with a maximum amplitude of 0.3 m at Kahului, Maui, and lesser heights on Oahu, Kauai, and at Hilo on Hawaii Island."
